Abstract
Objective: To investigate the factors influencing families' decisions to seek treatment for loved ones at psychiatric hospitals, specifically the RSJ.
Methods:
This qualitative study utilized a simple open-ended question format to gather data from families regarding their reasons for pursuing psychiatric care. Participants were recruited through [specify recruitment method] and responded to the question: “Why did you decide to go to the psychiatric hospital?” Thematic analysis was conducted on the responses to identify key themes.
Results:
Seven key themes emerged from the analysis: (1) deteriorating patient condition; (2) desire for appropriate treatment; (3) influence from family and healthcare workers; (4) difficulty managing patient behavior; (5) limitations of previous treatments; (6) economic considerations; and (7) urgency to seek recovery. Families expressed a strong sense of urgency for professional intervention, often driven by escalating symptoms and challenging behaviors. Economic factors, particularly the availability of free services, also played a crucial role in treatment decisions.
Conclusions:
The findings highlight the multifaceted nature of factors influencing treatment-seeking behavior among families. There is a need for improved access to mental health services and support systems to aid families in navigating these complex decisions. Raising awareness and educating families about mental health resources can empower them to make informed choices regarding treatment options.
