Abstract

This research is motivated by the existence of low-income people in urban areas who have difficulty in obtaining adequate housing and this results in uncontrolled building density and creating slum settlements. This research aims to describe the conditions of slums residence and the characteristics of poor communities in illegal urban slum settlements located in Kwala Bekala Village. The research method used is qualitative research with a descriptive analysis approach through literature study, observation, interviews and documentation. The research shows that the physical condition of the illegal settlement environment in Kwala Bekala is in accordance with the seven criteria for identifying slum settlements, including those in the slum settlement category. Factors causing poverty in residential communities vary depending on the characteristics of the community itself, namely natural poverty, cultural poverty and structural poverty so that they do not have qualified human resources to be able to compete with society in general and are unable to get out of the cycle of poverty in their lives but they feel comfortable with their lives because the social ties that exist in residential areas are very high. Keywords : Poverty; Slums; Characteristics. This research is motivated by the existence of low-income people in urban areas who have difficulty in obtaining adequate housing and this results in uncontrolled building density and creating slum settlements.
