The Effect of Bentonite Adsorbent on the Quality of Patchouli Oil

Patchouli oil obtains from community distillation process generally contains substances of impurities, particularly iron (Fe), thus decrease the patchouli oil quality. Impurities removal process from patchouli oil can be done by using the absorption method. This study aims to determine the effect of Bentonite adsorbent over the quality parameters of patchouli oil. The experiment was carried out by activating Bentonite using 1 N HCl for 60 minutes and dried it in an oven with a temperature of 600oC for 120 minutes. The test used oil volume of 100 ml with a stirrer rotation speed of 100 rpm and bentonite adsorbent size of 80 mesh. The Mass of bentonite used is 1 to 4 grams with a patchouli oil adsorption performed for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes and 60 minutes to determine the most influential variable between weight of bentonite and time of adsorption. As a result, patchouli oil is becoming increasingly clear with the increasing mass of adsorbent used and the length of time of adsorption. Bentonite can absorb iron (Fe) ions contained in patchouli oil amounting to 18 % of the initial content of iron. Patchouli oil acid number prior to the adsorption process is outside the range of the SNI standard, which is amounted to 17.952. Once the adsorption process was carried out for 60 minutes with a 4 grams mass of adsorbent, it dropped to 4.488, which already meets the SNI standard. In addition, the value of patchouli alcohol in the patchouli oil which is initially amounted to 30.84 % has increased to 36.11 % after adsorbed by bentonite.
