The Potential Utilization of Pogostemon cablin Benth as Medicinal Plant: An updated Review

Abstract


Pogostemon cablin Benth or patchouli has been widely used as fixative or fragrance in perfume industry. However, recent studies have shown that patchouli as extracts, essential oil, or isolate have the activity to be used in recovery from several diseases condition. Our literature study indicates that patchouli has activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiemetic, antiallergy, antidepressant, antitumor, anticancer, antimalaria, anti-gastric ulcer, anti-obesity, antiaging, and immunosuppressant. Those activities were given by the administration of its essential oil or extracts (such as ethanol or water extracts), or isolates such as patchouli alcohol, β-patchoulene, pogostone, or patchoulene epoxide. This study will elaborate further and update the findings on activities of Pogostemon cablin to be used as medicinal plant.
