Abstract
Syzyigum cumini (L.) Skeels, a member of the Myrtaceae family, has traditional names as Jamblang (Aceh) or Duwet (Java) is a seasonal fruit that has been widely consumed by people in Indonesia. Its fruit is known to have antidiarrheal and antidiabetic activity. However, this plant can be used for other purposes as several researches have shown the potential activity of Syzygium cumini as a medicinal plant from leaves, barks, fruits, seeds, and its essential oil. Apart from its antidiarrhoeal and antidiabetic activity, the plant has also been studied to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-arthritic, anti-ulcer, gastroprotective, antileishmanial, and immunomodulator. This review highlights the findings on Syzygium cumini (L). Skeels potential activities as a medicinal plant that can be further developed into pharmaceutical preparations.
