Abstract

Dental caries has emerged as the predominant cause of tooth decay, affecting both children and adults. It is predominatly associated with the persistence of Enterococcus faecalis in the root canals. This microbial community forms a surface biofilm that adheres tenaciously to the radicular dentin wall, contributing to severe complications. Given the escalating bacterial resistance to conventional drugs, the exploration of effective antimicrobial agents from natural sources is imperative. In this context, Aceh patchouli has emerged as a promising therapeutic approach owing to its potential antibacterial properties. The current study aimed to evaluate the use of Aceh patchouli ethanol extract as an antibacterial and antibiofilm agent against E. faecalis, particularly in the context of root canal infections. Comprehensive review of the pertinent literature supports the plausibility of active compounds in Aceh patchouli as viable alternatives for combating E. faecalis growth and biofilm formation. Furthermore, the use of natural compounds offers the advantage of minimizing the adverse effects associated with chemical-based products. The findings of this study will contribute to the development of novel antimicrobial agent-based therapies with specific implications for dental caries prevention.
